Parmi tant de façons de raconter le cinéma, il en est une plutôt rare : l'autobiographie cinéphile. Celle de Jonathan Rosenbaum, Moving Places. A Life at the Movies (1980), a l'art très littéraire, quelque peu joycien, de se muer en un autoportrait, fasciné mais critique. D'une enfance privilégiée de cinéma l'Amérique surgit, avec ses mythes rutilants et ses pires croyances. Ainsi se tressent, au gré d'une logique persuasive des images envahissant toute réalité : une autopsie du Sud profond, vision sociale, politique, la douceur et le piège cruel des familles, un âge du cinéma à jamais disparu, et la nécessité d'une odyssée de soi. Un écrivain inlassable des films se reconnaît ; il n'a plus cessé, depuis ce premier livre, d'arpenter la planète cinéma.
