Réputé pour son goût de la démesure (La Grande Parade, Duel au soleil, Le Rebelle), King Vidor a traversé les époques et les genres du cinéma hollywoodien classique. De La Foule et d’Hallelujah à Salomon et la reine de Saba, il a marqué l’histoire du cinéma de son empreinte. Poète épique pour ses admirateurs, raciste et fasciste pour ceux que heurtent Le Grand Passage ou Le Rebelle, Vidor échappe aux étiquettes. Taxés de misogynie, ses mélodrames (Stella Dallas, Ruby Gentry) sont aujourd’hui relus et réhabilités par les féministes. Cinéaste de la violence et du désir, Vidor se fait, dans Guerre et paix, portraitiste amoureux d’Audrey Hepburn. Artiste personnel au cœur d’un système standardisé, il est peut-être avant tout le premier véritable auteur du cinéma américain.
