Cinéaste atypique de l’univers hollywoodien, Lewin était l’ami de Jean Renoir et de Man Ray, le bras droit d’Irving Thalberg à la MGM et un collectionneur passionné d’œuvres surréalistes et pré-colombiennes. Sa carrière multiforme, riche de références musicales, picturales et littéraires est un modèle d’exception. Sa biographie et sa filmographie sont complétées par des témoignages pour la plupart inédits en français et des documents rares qui témoignent de son originalité.
