Ce livre étudie l'évolution esthétique, économique et sociale, du cinéma d'animation français des années 1950 aux années 2010. Il se constitue comme champ artistique, aboutissant à une reconnaissance tardive. Durant les années 1980, le système d'organisation le fait passer de la corporation au marché créé et régulé par l'Etat. Un véritable modèle français s'élabore : une construction originale et mixte, entre privé et public, entre court métrage underground et dessin animé pour enfants, entre canaux télévisés et salles de cinéma...
