L'objectif de ce numéro est d'explorer le contenu social et politique du cinéma offert au grand public. Pour ce faire, il faut se confronter à un problème incontournable tant au plan définitionnel que conceptuel: comment distinguer le cinéma "populaire" des cinémas "d'auteur", "expérimental" ou "documentaire" ? Le clivage entre films "populaires" et films d'auteur est moins marqué qu'il n'y paraît. Le cinéma de divertissement ne s'interdit pas de délivrer des messages au public et l'aspect financier est rarement absent de la production du cinéma d'auteur.
