Du fameux plan rapproché de la Veuve Jones qui fit, en 1896, scandale chez les puritains à la loi scélérate qui créa le ghetto de la production hard, l'histoire du cinéma se confond avec une incessante lutte contre l'ordre moral.
Avec ce recueil d'articles, certains puisés dans vingt années de « Revue du Cinéma ». d'autres inédits, s'écrit la longue marche du cinéma vers la reconnaissance d’un statut d'art adulte.
Ces pages, le plus souvent passionnées, arrachées au grand livre de l'amour, sont les éléments d'une mosaïque qui n'est disparate qu'en apparence. Réunis en quatre grands chapitres (images de femmes, pour une histoire du genre, filmer l'impossible, les prospérités du vice), ces points de repère témoignent de la multiplicité des regards posés par le cinéma sur les mystères du sexe.
