Loin d'être un ouvrage théorique, ce livre revisite la filmographie du célèbre cinéaste new-yorkais avec l'ambition de lui rendre sa réelle ampleur. Avec un grand luxe de détails, l'auteur indique comment le cinéaste interroge toutes les illusions qu'entretient soigneusement l'être humain sur lui-même et sur le monde (sur son identité, sur l'amour, sur la rationalité…) et parvient à en saisir les subtilités en s'appuyant concrètement sur de nombreuses scènes et des dialogues-clefs.
