Dans les années 60, Jean-Luc Godard en appelait à un renouveau de la pensée progressiste. Sa pente libertaire et sa proximité avec les Etats-Unis auraient pu l'inciter à se tourner vers le mouvement contestataire américain. S'y affirmaient les droits des minorités, un renouveau féministe et les débuts de l'écologie. Mais il préféra finalement embrasser un marxisme-léninisme archaïque et desséchant.
