A peine deux ans après le retentissant succès de Voyage au bout de l'enfer (1978), l'insuccès commercial tout aussi retentissant de La Porte du paradis (1980) fut tel que son auteur se retrouva victime d'un inflexible ostracisme de la part d'Hollywood et cela accéléra la fin de sa carrière. C'est à cet artiste cultivé et ambitieux – qui provoqua avec son cinéma de rudes débats – que Giampiero choisit de Frasca dédier un riche travail amplement documenté. Son objectif n'est pas tant de réévaluer son œuvre, mais plutôt de l'analyser pleinement en allant au-delà de ce qui relève de l'anecdote du scandale qui, à partir de La Porte du paradis, a accompagné le jugement du public et de la critique.
