Un siècle après sa naissance, le cinéma connaît une croissance régulière portée par de nouveaux marchés. Engagé dans une mutation numérique, il combine grande stabilité et profondes transformations. La production, malgré une internationalisation, n'a pas connu de bouleversement majeur. La distribution a composé avec l'arrivée des géants du numérique, les GAFAN, qui a accompagné le développement de nouveaux modèles économiques et de nouveaux modes de consommation (abonnement illimité) qui se superposent aux autres formes de consommation, comme la salle. Stratégique sur les plans culturel, commercial et diplomatique (soft power), le cinéma a toujours fait l'objet d'une attention des pouvoirs publics. Sa régulation doit s'adapter à un contexte évolutif et à une concurrence internationale, où l'importance du cinéma américain est confrontée à un monde plus polycentrique. L'économie de ce secteur majeur et mondial et ses enjeux contemporains sont ici décryptés.
