Soixante-dix ans après sa sortie, Chantons sous la pluie (1951) reste l'un des films les plus appréciés jamais réalisés. Pourtant, malgré un succès fulgurant auprès du public, il n'a jamais reçu sa juste part d'analyse critique. Le génie de Gene Kelly en tant qu'interprète est indéniable. Sa contribution innovante en tant que réalisateur est moins souvent reconnue. L'étude éclairante de Peter Wollen rend justice à ce film complexe. Dans sa préface à cette édition spéciale, publiée pour célébrer le 20e anniversaire de la collection BFI : Les Classiques du Cinéma, Geoff Andrew revient sur l'héritage du film et célèbre la passion, la lucidité et l'originalité de l'analyse de Wollen.
