Le 27 octobre 1971, en plein cœur du Quartier latin, un nouveau cinéma ouvre ses portes : le Saint-André-des-Arts. Le succès des deux salles est fulgurant : les spectateurs plébiscitent une programmation qui affiche de jeunes auteurs qui interrogent la société post-soixante-huitarde. Derrière le succès du cinéma de la rue Saint-André-des-Arts officie un homme sensible et discret : Roger Diamantis. Il incarne bientôt la figure combative des exploitants indépendants du Quartier latin, malmenés par la puissance des grands circuits et du système de distribution des films. Le Saint-André-des-Arts, désirs de cinéma depuis 1971 relate le parcours d'un autodidacte qui a oeuvré pour maintenir un lieu dédié à un cinéma exigeant et novateur.
