Rome, août 1958. Ava Gardner s'ennuie sur un tournage alors, hors champ, elle invente la dolce vita avant Fellini. Par une nuit arrosée, la star entraîne son chef opérateur, le timide Giuseppe Rotunno, dans une séance photo inspirée des grands nus de l'histoire de l'art. Dont un scandaleux tableau de Courbet... Les Nuits d'Ava raconte ce moment de bascule où Ava Gardner affronte l'érosion de sa propre image en s'adonnant à toutes les dérives. Et l'obsession parfois distraite d'un certain Jacques Pierre, historien fantasque, qui s'improvise détective sur les traces des quatre clichés produits cette nuit-là.
