Joann Sfar nous donne à lire dans ce livre événement l'intégralité de l'histoire de Gainsbourg qu'il voulait raconter depuis longtemps. Une histoire racontée en bande dessinée et en story board. Ce livre gargantuesque offre aussi toutes les images dessinées par Sfar pour préparer le film. Une somme fabuleuse (un millier d'images !) de croquis, de recherches diverses, de grandes illustrations, de notes graphiques, qui se laissent dévorer comme le roman de la vie de Gainsbourg, mais aussi comme l'histoire d'un auteur de génie qui s'empare d'un sujet pour y plonger totalement.
