On connaissait Sam Shepard dramaturge (Prix Pulitzer en 1979), acteur (L'Étoffe des héros, Les Moissons du ciel), scénariste pour Wim Wenders (Paris, Texas) ou Michelangelo Antonioni (Zabriskie Point) et bien sûr écrivain (Motel Chronicles). On découvre un Sam Shepard nettement plus intime grâce à sa correspondance avec son ami Johnny Dark. Dans cette correspondance extraordinaire, illustrée par de nombreuses photographies couleurs de Johnny Dark ainsi que par des reproductions de lettres, les deux hommes se livrent avec une rare honnêteté, évoquant notamment leurs cheminements créatifs respectifs, la décision de Shepard de quitter sa femme et son fils pour l'actrice Jessica Lange, les auteurs qui stimulent leurs réflexion, leurs relations avec les femmes, leurs luttes avec l'alcool et les drogues et les décès de leurs proches. Au final, ce livre raconte de façon extrêmement touchante une longue amitié entre deux hommes différents, mais définitivement liés. L'un célèbre et l'autre non.
