Lors d'un concert à New York, une fusillade éclate et le saxophoniste Izzy Maurer est touché par une balle perdue. Cet accident va bouleverser sa vie. Convalescent, le musicien, marche dans Manhattan avec difficulté quand, au hasard d'une rue, il tombe sur un cadavre. Epouvanté, il s'enfuit en emportant la mallette de l'inconnu. De retour chez lui, il en inspecte le contenu et trouve une pierre qui, dans l'obscurité, devient bleue et s'élève lentement au- dessus du meuble sur lequel il l'a posée... Dans ce scénario comme dans les entretiens qui l'accompagnent, Paul Auster affirme que la magie existe bel et bien, et qu'elle est porteuse de toutes les émotions de la réalité. En cela, Lulu on the Bridge s'inscrit parfaitement dans l'œuvre de l'écrivain américain.
