Le tournage de "Espoir - Sierra de Teruel" eut lieu d'août 1938 à janvier 1939. En août 1939, André Malraux présenta son film devant les membres du gouvernement espagnol en exil. En septembre, son exploitation fut interdite par le gouvernement Daladier, sous la pression de l'ambassadeur de France à Madrid, Philippe Pétain. La version que nous connaissons reprend celle qui fut diffusée en 1945 et reçut le prix Louis Delluc. Dans "Espoir - Sierra de Teruel", André Malraux a décrit la tragédie de la guerre d'Espagne, la bataille d'un peuple fier et torturé et a réalisé un des plus grands films de l'histoire du cinéma.
