Ce livre paraît à l'initiative des Amis de Michel Simon, association présidée par Monica Tixier à La Ciotat, où l'acteur vécut de nombreuses années. Une existence troublée, habitée par cette beauté de diable, tragique et pathétique, qui l'enferma trop souvent dans des emplois de "sales cocos", comme il disait. François Billard retrace la carrière entre ombres et lumières d'un personnage qui, dans sa vie privée comme à l'écran, pouvait être aussi imprévisible et ambigu, que se révéler humble et attachant. Mythe et référence de l'âge d'or du cinéma, artiste génial, il marqua de son anticonformisme toutes les entreprises théâtrales et cinématographiques - les chefs d'œuvre comme les navets - auxquelles il participa.
