Avec ce premier long-métrage tourné en 1968, loin d'Hollywood et avec un petit budget George A. Romero bouleverse d'emblée l'esthétisme et les valeurs du fantastique à l'écran. Violence des images, arrière-plan politique mais aussi inventivité des plans, esthétisme avant-gardiste et grand réalisme des situations et des pulsions humaines. Une œuvre culte, séminale de tous les films, bd et série sur les zombies dans ce roman-photo au croisement des frissons cinématographiques et l'esthétique bande dessinée.
