Avec quatorze films réalisés après une importante carrière à la télévision, Sam Peckinpah a tenu une place importante dans le cinéma américain de ces trente dernières années. Marginal, réfractaire à l'idéologie hollywoodienne, Peckinpah appartient clairement à cette tradition de revendication et de dissidence qui fait de beaucoup de romanciers et de cinéastes américains des "rebelles" dressés contre l'injustice et les mythes mensongers de la civilisation américaine. L'œuvre de Peckinpah procède d'une sensibilité où coexistent la clairvoyance et la passion, le romantisme et l'ironie. Le monde qu'il peint est à l'image de ses contradictions. Le bien y mime le mal : l'ambiguïté est la règle.
