Paris, 1937. Jean Cocteau, artiste génial, connu et reconnu, fait la rencontre d'un jeune aspirant comédien, Jean Marais. Entre ces deux là, la fascination est réciproque, l'affection profonde et la passion pour le théâtre, commune. Cocteau soutient les débuts de Marais sur les planches, Marais porte sans relâche le combat de Cocteau contre les affres de l'opium. La guerre menace, puis éclate. Bien que conspué par la presse collaborationniste, Cocteau refuse "de se laisser distraire des choses sérieuses par la frivolité dramatique de la guerre"...
