Un soir d'orage, Mary, qui a dérobé 40 000 dollars à son patron, s'arrête dans un motel miteux et isolé. Le propriétaire est un vieux garçon un peu étrange mais sympathique. Epuisée par dix-huit heures de route, la fugitive s'accorde une douche bien méritée. A travers une fissure dans le mur, quelqu'un l'observe... Ce roman horrifique a inspiré le film le plus célèbre d'Alfred Hitchcock.

Scénariste américain né en 1917 et mort en 1994, Robert Bloch a écrit de nombreux thrillers et romans noirs. Psychose, dont la première édition date de 1957, a été adapté au cinéma par Alfred Hitchcock en 1960.
