Parmi ces derniers, Norman Mailer a été l'un des premiers à prêter sa voix à la star hollywoodienne, ou plutôt à imaginer la sienne. Car c'est elle qui parle ici, évoquant les temps forts et parfois tragiques d'une vie aux succès incertains, aux amours difficiles, aux lendemains alourdis par un passé sans cesse recommencé. On trouvera dans ces pages le portrait le plus bouleversant jamais tracé d'une femme pour qui le bonheur fut une oasis reculant sans cesse, comme un mirage à l'horizon. C'est Mailer qui tient la plume, et c'est Marilyn que l'on entend.
