Septembre 1941. Aux Etats-Unis, le mouvement isolationniste et antisémite America First gagne du terrain et le président Roosevelt n'arrive pas à faire basculer son pays dans la guerre. A Hollywood, on prépare la contre-attaque avec un film engagé en faveur de l'intervention, mais sa vedette, la star Lala, est victime d'un chantage qui pourrait tout compromettre. Vicky Mallone, détective privée, légèrement portée sur les cocktails et les femmes, va voler à son secours avec l'aide d'un vieux fédéral bougon et, lorsqu'il est sobre, d'Errol Flynn en personne. Le tournage du film va bientôt concentrer toutes les menaces et tous les enjeux de l'époque. Mais qui manipule qui à l'ombre des plateaux ? Un hommage au polar selon Chandler et au cinéma en noir et blanc dans un contexte politique étonnamment contemporain.
