Mac - petit flambeur mais gros perdant - vit en marge du milieu et protège Johnny, un jeunot un peu braque qui a trois activités dans la vie : manger des glaces, regarder la télévision et faire tout ce que veut Mac. Depuis quelque temps, c'est tuer. En toute innocence. Quant à Simon, flic de San Francisco, il a juré de venger la mort d'un collègue, fût-ce au prix de sa propre existence. A travers tous les Etats-Unis, un destin particulièrement tordu va resserrer sa nasse autour des trois hommes.
