Dans la veine de ses précédents chefs-d'œuvre des années trente, Renoir continue de pratiquer ce "cinéma impur" que défendait André Bazin. Mais l'adaptation littéraire a beau puiser ici sa référence majeure dans le théâtre, nul film n'encourt moins le reproche de se réduire à du théâtre filmé : méthode de tournage, direction d'acteurs, montage, accords, profondeur de champs... ce film qui déconcerta tant son premier public n'a peut-être pas fini de livrer tous ses secrets.
