Le phénomène du cinéma des « hommes forts » est un chapitre peu connu, quoique important, de l'histoire du cinéma italien. Il s'ouvre au lendemain du grand succès international du Quo Vadis ? de Guazzoni et de Cabiria (1914), le grand chef d'œuvre de Pastrone. Néanmoins, le genre des « émules de Maciste » se développe au cours des années les plus difficiles du cinéma italien, années de décadence qui suivent immédiatement la première guerre mondiale…
