Bien que nous ayons aujourd'hui une plus grande compréhension de l'état de la narration cinématographique avant que D.W Griffith ne commence à réaliser des films en 1908, nous savons peu de choses de la Vitagraph, qui était une important compagnie américaine au moment de l'essor du Nickelodeon, de 1905 à 1907 : c'est sur EDISON et sur la Biograph, et sur les films de Edwin PORTER et de GRIFFITH qu'ont porté la plupart des recherches sur les premières compagnies cinématographiques américaines…
