Danseuse, actrice, cinéaste révolutionnaire, photographe remarquable, plongeuse hors pair, Leni Riefenstahl (1902-2003) est, aux yeux du monde, la cinéaste qui s’est fourvoyée en se mettant au service du nazisme.
En 1932, sa rencontre avec Adolf Hitler change son destin. Dès son accession au pouvoir, elle accepte la direction artistique du film du Congrès du Parti nazi à Nuremberg, Le Triomphe de la volonté, archétype du film de propagande. Puis elle réalise en 1936 le film officiel des Jeux olympiques, Les Dieux du stade, qui devient un succès mondial. Après la guerre, Leni Riefenstahl est souvent détestée. Mais son héritage est immense et les plus grands cinéastes reconnaissent son influence. Seul l’art a compté pour elle, et c’est bien ce reproche qui obscurcit sa postérité.
Jérôme Bimbenet perce le mystère de la « douce amie du Führer » qui n’a jamais connu la moindre once de remords et qui ne cessera de répéter : « Où est ma faute ? »
