Considéré comme l’héritier du cinéma burlesque de l’âge d'or, Etaix construit son œuvre à un tournant de l’histoire, à l’époque où, sans rien perdre de son efficacité primordiale, le grand cinéma comique se trouve en risque d’être frustré de la large audience populaire qui fut toujours sa raison d’être. Le Soupirant (1962), Yoyo (1964), Tant qu’on a la santé (1965) et Le Grand amour (1969) sont autant d’actes de foi dans la souveraineté du comique pur.
