Un architecte américain se rend à Rome pour superviser une exposition sur Étienne-Louis Boullée, architecte français du XVIIIe siècle. Accompagné de sa jeune femme enceinte, il se plaint rapidement de douleurs abdominales... Un film-hommage à la figure du cercle, tant dans les croquis des constructions sphériques de Boullée qu'à travers l'image du ventre porteur de mort (l'architecte atteint d'un cancer) et de vie (son épouse enceinte).
