Comment le roman moderne parle-t-il des images industrielles : cinéma, mais aussi photographies et télévision ? Cette thématique a-t-elle des répercussions sur le processus d'écriture ? Comment les mots, habitués à rendre compte d'un certain type de perception visuelle, peuvent-ils traduire cette visualité neuve qui découpe le réel de façon inhabituelle ? Les images entretiennent avec le monde d'autres relations référentielles que le langage articulé, imposant d'autres rapports entre signifiants et signifiés. Rapports essentiellement ambigus où réalité et illusion s'échangent constamment et qui neutralisent les significations symboliques du langage. Il s'agit là d'un véritable retournement de la façon dont l'homme contemporain se situe par rapport au réel et à l'imaginaire. Retournement lourd de virtualités subversives à l'égard d'une culture dont on tente de retracer l'évolution progressive, au contact des progrès techniques, vers la perte du rationnel et l'incertitude face à la réalité.
