Le Troisième Homme nous plonge dans la Vienne d'après-guerre, où le trafiquant Harry Lime a fait venir son ami Rollo Martins avant de mourir dans des circonstances mystérieuses. Version moderne d'Orphée et d'Eurydice avec, en guise d'Enfer, les égouts d'une Vienne fantomatique, ce roman tout en chausse-trapes est suivi ici du non moins trépidant Dixième Homme. Un court récit où une substitution d'identité à la veille d'une exécution d'otages donne lieu à de tragiques quiproquos et d'inquiétants rebondissements.
