Le soir du 31 mai 1982, alors qu’il célèbre son trente-septième anniversaire, Rainer Werner Fassbinder n’a plus que dix jours à vivre. Il aura réalisé quarante-trois films.
À mesure qu’avance la nuit, dans le vertige de la fête, le cinéaste devient le spectateur de sa propre existence. Il remonte le fil du temps par saccades, dans un montage où se mêlent les premiers tournages, la fresque «Berlin Alexanderplatz», le combat de la Fraction armée rouge dans l’Allemagne des années soixante-dix, sa passion pour le corps de ses acteurs…
Il émane de ce texte d’Alban Lefranc, écrit dans une prose inspirée et jouissive, toute la force du cinéma de Fassbinder, la volonté de mener une expérience frénétique jusqu’au bout, dans la vie et dans l’art.
