" Le théâtre est mort! " L'idée que l'arrivée du cinéma parlant, à la fin des années 1920, signerait la mort du théâtre est largement partagée dans la presse de l'époque, qui parle de "détournement" du public et de "défection" des auteurs dramatiques et des acteurs qui se tourneraient alors résolument vers le septième art. Pourtant aucune véritable étude chiffrée n'a été conduite pour vérifier l'exactitude de cette assertion. Par le biais d'une étude locale, cet ouvrage propose une relecture des rapports entre le cinéma et le théâtre à Lyon lors de la généralisation du parlant. Contrairement aux idées reçues, si les théâtres lyonnais connaissent des difficultés dans les années 1930, la concurrence du film parlant n'en est pas la cause principale.
