Le livre retrace le parcours du cinéaste Robert Kramer, de ses premiers films réalisés aux États-Unis à la fin des années 1960 en lien avec son activité de militant politique, à ses derniers essais cinématographiques réalisés en France dans les années 1990.
Son œuvre est indissociable de sa vie. Aussi, à travers ces pages, se dessine un portrait du cinéaste. Son engagement dans le monde passait par la réalisation de ses films qu’il considérait comme des « feux de camps dans la nuit. »
