Jacques Deray fait un étrange métier. Il est metteur en scène de cinéma. En racontant son travail, film après film, Jacques Deray se lance ici à la recherche de lui-même. Avec la pudeur, mais aussi l'acuité et la rigueur qui lui sont propres. Je le connais de longue date : c'est un homme de style. Je retrouve dans sa phrase l'élégance et l'efficacité de ses mouvements de caméra. Voici un voyage dans le cinéma. Un beau voyage. Et derrière le chemin de vie, que nous parcourons tous, souvent, sans y réfléchir, Jacques Deray pose une question, dont il nous charge de trouver la réponse : est-ce l'homme qui accomplit l'œuvre ? Ou est-ce l'œuvre qui fait l'homme ?
