Fictions géopolitiques est un livre qui voyage : livre de cinéma (qui parle de littérature), de géographie (d'un point de vue esthétique), de philosophie politique (chargé d'histoire). Comment représenter la complexité de notre système-monde ? Comment concevoir de le changer ? Fredric Jameson propose un atlas inédit en quatre points cardinaux qui sont autant d'exercices de " cartographie cognitive ": Le Jour de l'éclipse (1988) d'Alexandre Sokourov, Terrorizer (1986) d'Edward Yang, Passion (1981) de Jean-Luc Godard et Perfumed Nightmare (1977) de Kidlat Tahimik. Les textes publiés ici forment le second volet de l'ouvrage The Geopolitical Aesthetic (1992). Le premier a été traduit en français sous le titre La Totalité comme complot (Les Prairies ordinaires, 2007).

Philosophe inventif et radical, Fredric Jameson a largement contribué au renouveau de la pensée marxiste. Auteur d'ouvrages au retentissement mondial (The Political Unconscious, Signatures of the Visible, Postmodernism), il est considéré comme un des théoriciens de la culture les plus importants de ces trente dernière années.
