Le 4 octobre 2008, de retour de La Nouvelle Orléans où il tournait son nouveau film, Bad Lieutenant : Port of Call New Orleans, Werner Herzog a reçu Hervé Aubron et Emmanuel Burdeau à l'opéra de Valencia alors qu’il préparait la mise en scène de Parsifal. Dans le long entretien qu'il leur a accordé, le cinéaste parle de ses films, près de cinquante-cinq à ce jour, et de ses nombreux projets. Il revient notamment sur Aguirre, la colère de Dieu (1972), Nosferatu – fantôme de la nuit (1978) ou Fitzcarraldo (1982), ainsi que sur certaines grandes œuvres récentes, dont Grizzly Man (2005) et Encounters At The End Of The World (2007).
Le cinéaste décrit surtout les expériences humaines sans lesquelles son œuvre n'aurait pas pu exister : une enfance de solitude et de fantaisie dans les montagnes bavaroises ; la marche à pied le long des frontières d'Allemagne, en Afrique et aux Etats-Unis ; la fascination pour le vol et pour la grotte de Chauvet ; la passion de l'Histoire, l'admiration pour Hannibal et pour Tite-Live ; la pratique de l'écriture, l'amitié avec Ryzard Kapuscinski et Bruce Chatwin ; le sentiment de l'avenir, du caractère éphémère de la race humaine et la proximité avec le danger, depuis toujours.

MANUEL DE SURVIE est le premier livre d'entretien avec Werner Herzog publié en français. Deux textes écrits par Hervé Aubron et Emmanuel Burdeau accompagnent l'entretien qu'ils ont mené à Valencia (Espagne) le 4 octobre 2008.
