En 1926, Maurice Noverre, premier historien du cinéma, publie un livre qui fait polémique : Emile Reynaud serait le véritable inventeur de la projection animée. C'est en réalité l'aboutissement d'une bataille de longue haleine durant laquelle Maurice Noverre tenta de réhabiliter Georges Méliès et d'autres "oubliés" des premiers temps du cinéma en adoptant une position clairement antilumiériste. Publié à compte d'auteur, l'ouvrage était introuvable. Sébastien Roffat, historien spécialiste du cinéma d'animation, a décidé de diriger la publication de la nouvelle édition.
