George Lucas (né en 1944) est l'un des producteurs, scénaristes et réalisateurs les plus influents issus du Nouvel Hollywood, et l'un des représentants de l'ère des blockbusters dans les années 1980 avec Steven Spielberg. Lucas a tourné deux films, THX 1138 (1971) et American Graffiti (1973), avant de réaliser en 1977 le premier épisode de la saga Star Wars, suivi de L'Empire contre-attaque (1980) et du Retour du Jedi (1983). Seize ans plus tard, une nouvelle trilogie a vu le jour: La Menace fantôme (1999), L'Attaque des clones (2002) et La Revanche des Sith (2005). Star Wars a en outre été décliné en séries télévisées, en jeux vidéo, en bandes dessinées... Avec cette saga à la fois limpide et foisonnante, Lucas a créé un empire commercial et initié une véritable révolution technologique.
