Pionnier essentiel, maillon souvent manquant dans les histoires du cinéma, Emile Cohl (1857-1938), grand caricaturiste cinéaste pionnier, inventif et moderne, est ici questionné et mis en lumière par un collectif de critiques, historiens et conservateurs de cinéma. Son incroyable parcours, ses collaborations avec les grands noms du cinéma d'alors, tel Louis, Feuillade, son indéniable apport au nouveau langage cinématographique sont prétextes à une définition du cinéma: aurait-il transmis un virus au cinéma et lequel? une découverte historique et contemporaine, focalisée sur la source "incohérente" et faisant le lien avec des expressions plastiques contemporaines, accompagnée d'une iconographie d'exception, pour célébrer de manière vivante le centenaire de la première projection de Fantasmagorie (1908).
