Metteur en scène du visible, Stanley Kubrick appelle à explorer une nouvelle, et très ancienne, conception du cinéma. « Barry Lyndon » ou « 2001 Space Odyssey » en témoignent : le cinéma est de plus en plus engagé dans une réflexion sur sa propre nature et, en même temps, sur la nature de la représentation. Abandonnant les structures narratives classiques, il découvre l'ambiguïté de ses images, qui promettent un signifié et donnent à voir bien autre chose. En cela il dit comment, classique ou moderne, toute image porte en soi un « cœur de ténèbre », où notre œil risque toujours de sombrer. Entraîné par Kubrick, le regard filmique propose ainsi un point de vue sur les conditions de la visibilité, et donc sur l'esthétique.
