Auteur dramatique, poète et pionnier du cinéma d’avant-garde sur la côte Ouest des États-Unis, James Broughton (1913-1999) préconisait " l’extase pour tous ". Adepte du Zen et du Taoisme, il exprimait dans ce texte sa vision du cinéma : " Pour moi le cinéma n’est pas un phénomène social ou la marque d’une interrogation culturelle, c’est un oracle potentiel de l’imagination. Pour moi le cinéma est poésie, amour, religion et mon devoir envers les Seigneurs de la création. "
