Cinéaste chilien né un 1941 et installé à Paris depuis 1974, Raoul Ruiz est l'auteur de près de cent films dont les plus connus sont L'Hypothèse du tableau volé (1978) Les Trois Couronnes du matelot (1982) et récemment Généalogie d'un crime (1997). Son dernier film, Le Temps retrouvé (1999), avec Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Mastroianni et John Malkovich fait ici l'objet d'un entretien inédit. Cinéphile averti et théoricien du cinéma, il a publié du Poétique du Cinéma aux Editions Dis-Voir (1995). Raoul Ruiz est en même temps un conteur qui, avec humour, mêle sans cesse la fiction à la réalité.
