Septembre 1878 : déportés loin de leurs terres, les Cheyennes se meurent dans l'hostile Territoire Indien. A bout de patience, sous le commandement des chefs Dull Knife et Little Wolf, ils décident de regagner le Montana. Commence alors un des plus terribles exodes de l'Histoire : 280 Cheyennes affamés marcheront durant quatre mois d'un terrible hiver. Contre eux, 10 000 soldats et 3 000 civils déterminés.
