En plus d'être un cinéaste, Jean Renoir fut un authentique polygraphe, ayant écrit plusieurs romans et pièces de théâtre, de nombreux articles et des textes autobiographiques. À cet ensemble vient s'ajouter sa correspondance, qui se développe lors de son exil aux Etats-Unis. Si la lettre de Renoir délivre des informations qui renseignent la création de certains films, la rhétorique qui est à l'œuvre peut nuancer l'histoire de la genèse cinématographique. Il utilise également la lettre pour rendre compte des bouleversements liés à l'exil et manifester son identité artistique.
