Depuis la fin des années 1980, Gus Van Sant est à la fois la tête de proue du cinéma américain indépendant, revendiquant une liberté artistique, comme en témoignent les films My Own Private Idaho ou Elephant, et l’auteur de certains grands succès populaires hollywoodiens, comme Prête à tout et Will Hunting. Construit autour d’un entretien avec le cinéaste, ce livre présente pour la première fois l’éventail de sa production cinématographique, mais aussi photographique et plastique, et fait la part belle à ses inspirations et collaborations majeures (William S. Burroughs, William Eggleston ou encore Bruce Weber), reliant ainsi l’œuvre de Van Sant à ses réflexions intimes, des anecdotes de première main et un discours fouillé sur la fabrication de ses films.
