Qui d’autre que Gus Van Sant a su proposer, dans l’espace sclérosé du cinéma américain contemporain, autant d’hypothèses esthétiques et narratives aussi stimulantes ? En effet, malgré la notoriété acquise, malgré l’adoubement en tant qu’Auteur dès My Own Private Idaho (1991), rien ne semble pourtant jamais joué d’avance dans la carrière du cinéaste, et chacun de ses films s’avance comme un espace vierge à conquérir.
De film en film, de Mala Noche (1985) à Paranoid Park (2007), en passant par Drugstore Cowboy (1989) ou encore Will Hunting (1997), l’itinéraire de Gus Van Sant ne cesse de déjouer les probabilités et relève davantage du « principe d’incertitude » que du plan de carrière pré-établi.
Ce volume d’Eclipses retrace et éclaire un parcours original et singulier, qui n’a certainement pas fini d’étonner.
