Possession (1981) d'Andrzej Zulawski est un film tentaculaire et sans cesse régénéré, traversé par une actrice (Isabelle Adjani) en transe. L'ouvrage que lui consacre Jérôme d'Estais approche le mystère d'une œuvre abstraite et physique devenue culte, en commençant par investir les lieux où elle vit le jour, à Berlin, en pénétrant dans son cosmos, gorgé de sens et de signes. Mais tout comme aucune vision ne l'a jamais asséché, aucune interprétation n'enlèvera jamais au film ni sa force, ni son mystère. Conscient qu'il a été pour son réalisateur son double autant qu'une exorcisation mise en images, cet essai est une tentative de dompter ce monstre magnifique devenu le nôtre, avec des images d'une intensité telle qu'elles continuent à bousculer notre théâtre intérieur.
